PhillipHunsberger The truth is that even if the middle easterners were all atheists there would still be friction because of western imperialism that has meddled in their politics, overthrown popular leaders, forming of Israel would still cause grievance to Palestinians even they were atheist too. A politically motivated terrorism may have ended up taking form, due to a sense of injustice, but i doubt it would have been less hard core or as widespread as we see with islamically motivated terrorism.

  2. ultrademigod There was a time of rapproachment of sorts. Once the ottoman empire got weak, relations improved for the most part. More so with the defeat of the ottoman empire because the British were seen by the arabs as being benefactors and liberators over the Ottomans. But growing arab nationalism (which was secular for a time), including cold war elements and also the founding of Israel, and a western need for oil brought an end to it. That said, i agree islam is expansionistic but all human history is. Including the west. Had it not been for the matter that the muslims and middle easterners were quite tough to beat in war, we'd have conquered them and made them a colony long ago. And they would had done the same to us but the military strengths were somewhat similar and western powers were often too busy fighting one another. And to a lesser degree so were the middle easterners.
