  1. How will 'winning' be defined? By the collapse of the Assad regime and establishment of some kind of transitional council of a new Syria. Which given Syria's background will likely prove to be even more unstable and volatile than Libya's transitional council.

  2. The Roman Republic fell because it got to the point that the war mongers took over the senate, getting rich through war and causing the people to lose confidence. Which led to Tyrants/Champions of the people (depending on your perspective) to take power. Tread carefully America. Human nature hasn't changed all that much since Roman times.
