I agree, i seriously doubt a business consortium (which doesnt seem to include any industry giants) and reality tv funding (which makes me loose even more faith in the project) will be able to undertake what is possibly the greatest, or at least bravest expedition ever launched in the history of our civilisation.

Gene Starwind When we do actually set up a real expedition for Mars (i'll take it back if this actually goes ahead) it will be brave and not pointless. It's going further than any humans have gone before, at personal risk. From a more practical point of view the Mars base would set up the groundwork for prospecting and research. By the time a we are actually able to launch a serious expedition (which will likely be much further ahead into the future) our robotics will be more advanced and we won't be far off having a means to send cargo back to Earth, thus making mining feasible. The base will then be able to work with industry to be able to set up an enlarged base to hold more engineers, machinery and robots with which they can set up mining and a Mars surface launchpad .

The reality tv show is a sham but when we do make a proper expedition it could make great benefits for humancivilisations once our propulsion systems are improved and we can haul the riches back to earth. Launching from Mars will probably be easier than launching from Earth. Maybe the prospectors wont find anything, but maybe they will find gold and other precious metals at a time that our mines will be depleted. Whether the expedition is fruitful or not largely comes down to that.
