  1. The Saudi regime and other similar gulf monarchies are deluded to think they can be a global player culturally. This story here, the desire of Qatar to host a world cup, the spending of fortunes to try improve their standing through construction of prestige buildings and state of the art shopping malls. It's all part of the program. But as long as they maintain their terrible, often sharia inspired human rights records they will merely be pariahs in the eyes of the world. Even their fellow muslims from poorer countries will feel disdain due to their abuse of migrant workers and indifference to the poverty of their muslim 'brothers' abroad.
