If military service is mandatory, it shouldn't be any debate whether they should serve the military or not.
I've heard that South Korea was considering to lower the amount of mandatory service so in that regard, maybe they should have a special case set for those that are very popular and have them serve a very short period in the military.
Or they should serve in some other way.
BTS is serving the country in a great way financially and culturally so I suppose one could make an argument that they are serving in that sense?
Honestly, this is not a surprising issue being debated these days. A lot of countries' laws are severely outdated and set into practice decades ago when society and culture was drastically different. So in this case, South Korea should update its laws in regards to the mandatory military service.
I will say that the near 2 years of military service would be a detriment to South Korea in terms of culture and money.
Given how drastically popular and profitable BTS is on a global scale, I think it would be beneficial to exempt them from the traditional military service. Instead they should figure out another way they can serve.
The way I see it, even if they all go through the full duration of military service, they're very very likely to be treated different and given a lot of special privileges while there.
At the same time, they won't be earning money and continuing to spread popularity. By the time they are finished, BTS might not be relevant anymore so that would be a big opportunity cost that South Korea might not be willing to take.
Also, I think the whole notion of mandatory military service is honorable, but it is an antiquated practice. Yes it helps build character, improve physical condition, teaches teammate, etc. But this is only mandatory because South Korea and North Korea are still at an armistice.
The armistice started on July 27, 1953 ... That's a little bit over 65 years now. That is pretty damn crazy if you think about it and how Korea is the only nation in the world that is divided and still technically at war.
So 65 years of mandatory military service for roughly 2 years for all South Korean men ... I think that South Korea should do something about this and make changes. I think they shouldn't make it mandatory. Instead they should make it voluntary like the US and have things like the Reserves on top of the usual military personnel.
In a sense, it's not fair how women are not required to serve.
I think if people are sincerely concerned for the safety and well being of their country, and are willing enough, they should join the military, navy, army, etc by their own free will and accord; not because it's mandatory.
Roughly 2 years is a lot of time you're sacrificing. In that time you could be working and making money, maybe get married and have kids (South Korea has a population issue as well), work on getting a PhD or Master's Degree, set up your own business, etc.
