I know that I might be trying to push my American ideals and culture, but honestly, I find that it's shameful that a nation would condemn someone like this for his sexual orientation. I'm not homosexual or part of the LGBTQ community or orientation, but I still think it's bad for someone to feel like they need to hide who they are because they'd be ridiculed, lose their job, etc.
Yes it might not be the norm of Indonesia mainly stemming from the Islamic beliefs. But I think that people should be free to practice their religion and free to identity however he/she wants without worrying about social perspectution and losing their job. This is just flat out discrimination.
Regardless of your religion (if you believe or not, practice or not, attend some sort of building or not), you shouldn't try to push your ideals just because a religion says so. Dietary restrictions, way of living, etc is fine. But you shouldn't use that an excuse to fire someone from their job, ridicule that person, look down on the person, etc.
Personally, I feel like religion and law should be 2 separate entities. Also, Indonesia mostly follows Islam, but it's not strictly and only a nation of Islam.
The overall message of religion is to treat each other well, right? How is this treating each other well because someone has a difference in opinion and preferences? That's just wrong. Really.
9:04 "We are born to be heterosexual." Actually no. I believe that we are born human and that sexual orientation is something that each individual learns through social interaction. I don't think that it's genetics. Yes as a race, we procreate through means of a male and a female together. But that's about as far as biology is involved as it pertains to the human race.
The construct of sexual orientation & identity is a product of social and cultural experience. Religion is a social product and activity. As human beings, we don't inherently need religion for survival or sustenance. You don't have to attend a building with others to be considered religious. You can be spiritual and be considered religious. You can believe none of this if you want. It's all your own choice as a result of it being a social product.
Basically I guess what I'm saying is that for this individual to openly identify as being gay is a social product. It's his choice. If it doesn't cause any physical harm to himself or others, ultimately why does matter? Why should it be a determining factor in regards to whether or not he is allowed to keep his means of earning a living?
Being part of a religion and doing these doctrines, studying the religious text, etc It's all fine. I have no qualms against that either. It's just that when people use that as a means to justify why (for example) it's wrong to be gay and as punishment you should lose your job ... That's just ridiculous.
