I think a bigger issue was the lack of the local support, most Vietnamese didn’t seem to like the Americans, probably because of the former owners of the French, and it’s said somewhere that “our marines know little about the language, history, and culture (of the Vietnamese).”, which like we saw in the Middle East makes it harder for the civilian population to not grow resentful of these foreign ‘invaders’ and gives the idea they’re not there to help them This just reminded me of a quote from General Mattis; “Culturally savvy marines are a threat to our enemies.”, Americans weren’t cultural savvy in Vietnam, those who did as said and commonly noted, were rotated out of country after a year.

Change the rules of engagement The RoE were far too restricted to win the war, how can you win without attacking the enemy directly? You don’t, geopolitically useful not to have china send it’s army again, but it was always going to fail with such horrendously restricted RoE Hence President Bush’s comment (referring to the gulf war) “This time we won’t be fighting with one hand tied behind our back.”
