A sad fate, surviving the most devastating war while captured by the west, and when you finally get to go home, the Russians snatch you

@Furzkampfbomber I detest the Russians on just about everything, but more subjectively I could never blame them for the treatment of German POWs, considering what the reverse situation looked like But yeah, it’s always the top guys who get off scot free, while the lower guys are the ones who take the beating

@joshb7300 you stupid fuck, read a history book or look at modern day, how many Russian bases are in Germany? None
7
@octotitan4574 he just ended up in a worse one :(
6
@michaelofminsk8951 lol okay bud

@dmitrizorkin3851 ...they didn’t know about the winter offensive in the south so it was a surprise This is how the word surprise works, if something happens that you didn’t know or expect, it surprises you
5
Horses have little combat value, the Soviet winter offensive at Stalingrad was a surprise
3
@Furzkampfbomber well I’m glad that he wasn’t gulag’d, I’d hope the rations were better too until he got sent back to the GDR
3
@antonm8719 what the name is doesn’t matter compared to what it did Hitler could’ve been called Swanson Jason or Jeffrey, still evil Gulag can be called or mean anything you want, they were still inhumane centers of torture and forced labor
3
I don’t know man have you been to math class?
2
@MilitaryHistoryVisualized ^there is also that problem of people trying to kill you
2
Right and then what happens to Army Group A? Oops like 95% of people don’t even know A there were two army groups and B the fact that even historically the Soviets after the encirclement did a dive to the Black Sea to cut off Army Group A
2
@martentrudeau6948 hindsight warrior, the intelligence didn’t know about the attack, from their contemporary view they only believed one offensive in the winter and it would be targeted at the middle salient, which it was, and was, and was by the way the larger of the offensives
2
I concur with Kom, this has to be the dumbest discussion to have ever It’s an accent guy, it’s like how southerners say water differently than northerners in America
2
The idea isn’t it would change the fortunes of war, it’s just a thought exercise, and considering what actually happened to the poor sods, yeah
2
Even the communists couldn’t drain Russia of mud
1
The discussion isn’t (or shouldn’t be) that “ah Stalingrad incident was avoided therefore German victory in the East” its just the story of Stalingrad is just awful, and the discussion is (should be) about if at a minimum the troops there could escape such an awful fate
1
So….what was the 14th panzer corps to you then? The one that was “…the most combat capable element of 6th Army…” 3:00
1
That’s exactly it
1
@louiswallis8687 Stalingrad was never a target for propaganda purposes, its strategic location was all that matters, it was on the cards in the initial phase to cut off the Soviet Union from its caucus holdings as the last rail hub to reach there
1
@louiswallis8687 any propaganda purpose is secondary to its strategic importance, as outlined by directive 41 It didn’t say bomb civilian buildings for the funny haha newspapers, it explicitly wanted to deny its lines of communication Sure The reichsminister for propaganda wouldve wet his little panties about it but it being the primary reason is another post war myth

Starvation: laughs
1
You’d deny what smart people would say on the basis of ethics (assuming what they’re saying is factual)? How’s that work?
1
Look up Eastory, he has mapping videos of the nazi Soviet war, it was a lot of units
