I find very strange how people feel it is Ok to ask what I consider to be personal questions to someone that they are not really close to, and "why do you work this and that" is one of those questions. Stop it, it is not your business, it is not friendly, it is the opposite of that, no matter "good intentions".

@StevenJohn91 Exactly. There are so many things you can talk about without being intrusive. I remember a lady janitor in my workplace that we started talking with on a permanent basis. We really talked about any king of stuff, not only superficial stuff, but life in general. At the end I knew about her son, she knew where I am from, etc.. but it never felt appropriate to ask her why she works this. There are many reasons a person would stay at a particular job and I really do not need to know them.
