For a parent every sickness is scary, for a child not at all, so you were not afraid because you were too young to be afraid, not because there was no vaccine. Then, when you grew up, you started to be afraid, not because there was a vaccine, but because you knew what could happen. For a kid nothing bad could happen ever.
