@eberkovich Not one inch. With these words, Secretary of State James Baker proposed a bargain to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev after the fall of the Berlin Wall: if you let your part of Germany go, we will move NATO not one inch eastward. Educate yourself.

@eberkovich Gorbachev let his Germany go, but Washington rethought the bargain, not least after the Soviet Union’s own collapse in December 1991. Washington realized it could not just win big but win bigger. Not one inch of territory needed to be off limits to NATO.

@foilhat1138 Not once, but three times, Baker tried out the “not one inch eastward” formula with Gorbachev in the February 9, 1990, meeting. He agreed with Gorbachev’s statement in response to the assurances that “NATO expansion is unacceptable.” Baker assured Gorbachev that “neither the President nor I intend to extract any unilateral advantages from the processes that are taking place,” and that the Americans understood that “not only for the Soviet Union but for other European countries as well it is important to have guarantees that if the United States keeps its presence in Germany within the framework of NATO, not an inch of NATO’s present military jurisdiction will spread in an eastern direction.”

rickylo3271 Germany was split in two after WW2 (I shouldn’t have to tell U this)…east and west. East Germany was a satellite state of the Soviet Union.

rickylo3271 So…US and Nato made an agreement w/ Russia to give up east Germany (Minsk)…Nato and US since violated it by moving eastward and surrounding Russia w/ nukes…Russia pushes its boundaries into Ukraine to protect itself from Nato. This war is about Russia vs. Nato and the US…Ukraine is just collateral damage caught in the middle…US and Nato is also using Ukraine as a pawn to fight its own agenda w/ Russia…Ukraine is getting used/ killed to fight for US and Nato without Nato getting blood on they’re hands…

@magnuscedergren2713 Secretary of State James Baker’s famous “not one inch eastward” assurance about NATO expansion in his meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on February 9, 1990, was part of a cascade of assurances about Soviet security given by Western leaders to Gorbachev and other Soviet officials throughout the process of German unification in 1990 and on into 1991, according to declassified U.S., Soviet, German, British and French documents. @bonnie7898 The Illegal March 2003 invasion of Iraq was conducted by a coalition of forces from different countries, some of which were NATO member countries. The irony that Ukraine contributed to the illegal invasion of Iraq as well but complains to the world when Russia invades they’re country. The US calling it operation Iraqi freedom killing 200k Iraqi civilians under completely false pretenses.

@bonnie7898 The invasion of Iraq was an act of aggression against a country that was not attacking or threatening to attack another country. It was also a violation of the UN Charter. It is unlikely that Bush, or any member of his administration, will ever stand trial for the crime of initiating a war of aggression.
