I think Australia's system is a good compromise from a totally free for everyone to having those who can afford it take out health insurance (after you earn 90K per year). I had a cataract operation that was done in a private hospital but under the auspices of a public hospital so it cost me nothing extra to my annual medicare contribution through tax. i do pay for tablets though they are not horrendously priced. The reason for the strange figures which have both dollars and cents is that they are indexed by CPI so they go up by a percentage that isn't rounded up or down. I wish our system got extended to cover dental.
