A lot of appreciation of wine is down to what you are used to. I like wines from most regions and am currently drinking wines from around 2000 that a mate gave me. They are delicious generally but an occasional one is corked. The Shiraz i opened tonight says it has a black cherry flavour and they couldn't be more right! This video must be a few years old as a 2015 Chardonnay would most likely be past it.

In my experience the high cost wines are usually worth the extra expense for an occasion but not for general drinking. there are plenty of mid range wines that are superb but of course it depends on your taste. When i was working in China I was asked my opinion of a bottle from the vineyard of my host (without seeing the bottle). I tasted it and suggested it was a two year old Cabernet Sauvignon and was from Australian winemaker. It turns out I was 100% correct and it was a great mid range wine.

@IWrocker Years ago I had visitor come to where I was working and his best friend had a winery in the Nappa Valley. We took our visitor to the pub for lunch and did a tasting of a couple of mid range Penfolds wines. He loved them and we arranged a mixed dozen bottles for him to take back to the US. The next order for ICs came in a tube with a couple of bottles from his friends vineyard. They were exceptional and it surprised me that they were in an Australian style but I guess that was why he was interested in Penfolds wines.
