In Victoria Australia pedestrians do not have right of way at roundabouts and you must give way to pedestrians on a road you are turning in to (but not the one you are turning from) and on slip lanes. Pedestrians are expected to give way to you at roundabouts but of course you use your judgement as to whether they might even know the rules.

I am glad you added the bit on the end as up until then i thought you had forgotten to say that you need to keep track of what the front of the car is doing. It annoys me that people back in to 90 degree car parks (yes it is compulsory in some places) as I think it holds up traffic more than backing out does. The other thing I find interesting is that when i learned to drive (1972) the car I learned in didn't have any external mirrors which was not uncommon in those days. When I got my licence we had a drivers side one put on (for towing) but never bothered with a passenger side one.

I think you hold the clutch pedal down too long but that is probably just due to you explaining things. In an emergency you can ignore the clutch and just pull the gear lever in to neutral and brake at the same time. This is not to be done in normal driving but it is useful to know that you can. If I am just braking to slow down a little -like when you get to road works then I just left foot brake. I know some people can't cope with left foot braking but I usually drive an auto and do it all the time. If more people did this then there would be less accidents from people pressing the wrong pedal with their right foot and ending up on the footpath.

I am Australian and when I got my licence in 1973 it was actually illegal in my State Victoria to reverse in to any parking space other than parallel. It was allowed in NSW but seems to be accepted now except in to angle parking bays. Unless you are loading into the rear of the vehicle I don't see the point of it but as a lot of new vehicles are SUVs the rear gets used more often than the boot of sedan did. I have a station wagon and never reverse park even though i find it easy to do in my car which is 4.9metres long (plus tow bar).

It was 10 to 2 when I learned to drive but that was before we had airbags. I tend to agree with your idea of a more 4 to 8 position.

If you are in a car like his that two external rear view mirrors then use them to judge where you are sitting on the road.
