Countries that have the infrastructure to still benefit from these LNG imports are the UK, France, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Malta, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, & Turkey. Tragically, Germany and other European nations that chose to integrate energy economies with Russia are now being threatened using that leverage. Fortunately, the tedious work can be started now to build new infrastructure and redirect their energy sectors away from Russian gas.

By then, the US M1 Abrams will be ready, but the Rasputitsa would stop any further heavy assaults. Opening a second route down Kherson Oblast from Kherson City would have been ideal, but the Russians went and blew up the Dam. I'm sure the UA expected that this was a possibility and so adapted accordingly.

But to be fair a part of the reason the cost of living crisis is hitting Germany so hard is because the CDU spearheaded a policy of energy dependence on Russia instead of spending that time looking for alternatives. Then again, the Green Party calls themselves "green" but they lobby for nuclear power to be exempt from the EU's green subsidies; being picky about renewable energy despite going through a cost of living crisis.

He constantly implies that (his version of) strategic autonomy can only be achieved by distancing Canada, the US, & core NATO allies. As if his political ideology is the only path forward for European security. The part that especially bothers me is Macron's willingness to achieve this by flirting with autocrats.

Strategic autonomy is a great idea, but, post-war, no French President has actually pulled it off at a European level. His dream of collective European Defense w/o the US is often labeled as "Europeanist" by the French Right, and Le Pen is a nationalist first, so Germany might get their way on the issue of defense. And honestly, the Right does have a point w/ that label. Before 2022, Macron was trying to get both Ukraine AND Russia into the EU to create a true European Superpower. Even Poland's (Hungary's big bro peer) ultra-conservative populism is unsavory but is not an extremist and existential threat to the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Under far-right extremism, "electoral autocracy", and full-blown cronyism, core democratic values and respect for human rights (principle requirement for NATO AND EU membership) have eroded into dust that is gone with the wind. It is preposterous that Ukraini -- a former USSR nation outside of NATO and EU in an ongoing war -- is a better fit for both the Union and Alliance than Hungary, a member that has signed both Articles of both organizations. The UN has already been reduced to nothing more than a glorified acronym that used to mean something. And the USA once stood for the states who believed in "United we stand, Divided we fall", but now it's a false acronym that masks disunity. But we cannot allow NATO and the EU to be mere acronyms; they are the few political organization that still truly means something. Furthermore, Hungary is complicit in Russia's war in Ukraini by hampering Europe's effort to stand against authoritarianism and to resurrect the spirit of Helsinki. Like George Orwell stated, objectively accurately, "Pacifism is objectively pro-Fascist. This is elementary common sense. If you hamper the war effort of one side you automatically help that of the other".

  56. Well, when I said Kherson would be the most intense battle of the war yet, I did not expect the Russian Armed Forces to abandon it. Still though, the UA could get bombarded from the other side of the river if they enter Kherson city despite being under their control soon. In any case, "the most grueling combat" I predicted may not be in Kherson City but on the south/east bank of the river. Depending on if the UA decides to cross it (presumably in the spring if at all) the 3 parallel lines of defense as well as the geography of the bank will be insurmountable to overcome -- but one step at a time first, since it's not even winter yet.

People should remember that -- while yes these are extraordinary times but still -- on average, it takes about 5 to 10 years for a North Atlantic nation to go through the bid process and finally achieve NATO accession. So the ball is still on Sweden & Finland's court. And honestly, it's pretty admirable that the Swedish Supreme Court isn't willing to bend the Rule of Law and Sweden's democratic values.

One argument goes, "just give this old man a point so he can stop killing Ukrainians".
