  1. Honestly, Hungary needs to be leashed and fast. Even Poland's (Hungary's big bro peer) ultra-conservative populism is unsavory but is not an extremist and existential threat to the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Under far-right extremism, "electoral autocracy", and full-blown cronyism, core democratic values and respect for human rights (principle requirement for NATO AND EU membership) have eroded into dust that is gone with the wind. It is preposterous that Ukraini -- a former USSR nation outside of NATO and EU in an ongoing war -- is a better fit for both the Union and Alliance than Hungary, a member that has signed both Articles of both organizations. The UN has already been reduced to nothing more than a glorified acronym that used to mean something. And the USA once stood for the states who believed in "United we stand, Divided we fall", but now it's a false acronym that masks disunity. But we cannot allow NATO and the EU to be mere acronyms; they are the few political organization that still truly means something. Furthermore, Hungary is complicit in Russia's war in Ukraini by hampering Europe's effort to stand against authoritarianism and to resurrect the spirit of Helsinki. Like George Orwell stated, objectively accurately, "Pacifism is objectively pro-Fascist. This is elementary common sense. If you hamper the war effort of one side you automatically help that of the other".

  2. "Sanction" -- means punitive action. Withholding aid because Hungary is not following humanitarian law and the EU benchmarks is punitive action.

  4. Except, Orban is not putting his people first; he is prioritizing his own self-interests. By weaponizing nationalism, he managed to widen his grip on power so his regime violates human rights, encourages intolerance and discrimination, and is flirting with Putin's regime. When you see an autocrat with an abusive relationship with democracy, you have to call it out unequivocally.

  5. Also, the EU is a UNION; a cooperation of European nations with a commitment to democracy and the rule of law. The fact that Hungary is able to act like this showcases the power of one single member country. This is why member states have incorporated the Qualified-Majority-Voting system.

  6. Finally, are you not missing something? What about the centuries of Austro-Hungarian dominance in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Budapest is just as guilty as the Romans, the Russian, the Ukrainians, and the Ottomans for porjecting geopolitical power.

  7. When nationalism is stoked and primed, populist shifts spoil democracies. In Hungary's case, majoritarianism turned an already illiberal democracy into an "electoral autocracy".
