  1. It isn't the coup itself, but the threat of a coup. I believe the only way Russia will stand down from Ukraine is if Putin finds another way to strengthen the credibility of his regime. The unfortunate truth is... War is popular (amongst the general public, not the more informed elites), and it can keep desperate people in power. And as long as there is a threat to his reign (and the power of the Siloviki), there will remain a political appetite in the Kremlin to continue fighting the costly, forever war.
