  2. They did expect a strong response from the IDF. Provoking Israeli war crimes upon Gaza helped Hamas cause friction between Israel & the international community. Where the plan backfired was that Hamas failed to anticipate the level of American response. Hamas thought the US was weak and too preoccupied to meaningfully help while also having to condemn Israeli war crimes. However, the US can walk and chew gum at the same time.

  4. True. The problem is Jerusalem is not the State of Israel's internationally recognized capital. That is Tel Aviv-Yafo. This is because Jerusalem is supposed to be a shared holy city. So, almost all countries that recognize Israel have their embassy only in Tel Aviv, making it the de-facto capital. That's why the Trump Administration's decision to recognize Israel's de-jure claim for Jerusalem, and moving the US Embassy there accordingly, was so controversial in the international community. The status of Jerusalem is still very complicated.
