  2. I feel bad for the goat Hannibal but Carthage deserved to lose. Greed, jealous, incompetence, and complacency kills empires. Rome didn't kill Carthage. Carthage killed Carthage. But in the bigger picture, Hannibal the master and Scipio the ace student reconciling at the end of their lives is such a great conclusion to the Second Punic War.

Rome's 'never surrenders' pathos is cool as hell and all, but if Rome had just surrendered -- or better yet, not have been so extortive after the first Punic War -- so many Romans wouldn't have been killed by Hannibal's vengeance. Losing 20% of the productive male population of the Roman Republic in one battle alone... I know that Rome won the Punic Wars in the end, but... at what costs?

Europe], the nations went back to failures of absolute monarchies sowing the seeds for the Social Revolutions of 1848. Now this makes sense to why Europe went from united peace to on the brink of the Great War in just 100 years.

  21. Of all of my favorite Presidents of the United States of America -- from FDR to Eisenhower & JFK to Obama & Biden -- Abraham Lincoln is, by far, the leader I am most grateful for. After all, Honest Abe led our country through the most difficult, divisive, and destructive eras of domestic American History. A time when Southern viewed slavery as a constitutional right and some Northerns viewed it as a political tool. A time when battles were decided by unbelievably large sums of mutual casualties and human suffering. And Lincoln still managed to successfully abolish slavery and save the Union despite the doubt and the darkness But, nevertheless, due to the hateful, drunken deeds of a disenfranchised extremist, Abe, himself, was never able to experience a period of American reconciliation and a chance for Americans to live in peace. That was taken away from him -- perhaps this, along w/ the pain of losing his son, is one of the greatest tragedies of the American Civil War. Regardless, we, Americans, remember our most honest presidents and project eternal gratitude for his leadership and sacrifice.
