Actually, appeasement's main philosophical point of view is a practical one -- to delay an inevitable World War as much as possible so that France & England could prepare/militarize as best as possible (as they were behind the German Warship at that time). Although, after figures like PM Neville Chamberlain & King Edward VIII foolishly used appeasement as a vector for "peace", post-war global hindsight saw appeasement as a failed system for a flawed sense of security. But the truth is... technically, appeasement succeeded because its objective was to stall the war, not prevent it.
