  1. They just needed time to adapt. After all, President Lincoln was never going unilaterally end slavery in the South. Despite being an abolitionist, he put the Union above all else.

  2. Yup. People in West Virginia wanted slavery but didn't want to commit treason by seceding. So it "joined" as a border state.

  4. That is the nature of evolution. Adapt or die. The South become to complacent and stuck in their way, then they reactively started a war that they couldn't win. If it had adapted sooner, so much self-caused suffering wouldn't have happened.
