@2ShayZeeGe They meant during the interwar period. Hawaii only became a state in 1959. 18 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

@nemunemufan ...a state not a country. Even when it wasn't a state, it was a US territory. Hawaii supported Japan's recognition because the US did -- & most Hawaiian prolly regretted it 2 decades later.

Also, while "The Lone Star" is the most independent state, last year's weather storms proved that Texas will be crippled w/o the rest of the States.

@adamhunt429 Also the attack on Pearl Harbor was unexpected for everyone because no one thought Imperial Japan was rash enough to drag another great power into the war. It's why people say that Pearl Harbor and Operation Barbarossa were the turning points of WW2.

@deeboxjones6601 There is a reason philosophies like "United we Stand, Divided we Fall" & "E Pluribus Unum" are the backbone of America's union. While States look after themselves, the Federal Government has served as the cohesion that maintains the strength of the Union. This has been proven time and time again; during the War of 1812, Civil War, Reconstruction, both World Wars, the Great Depression, Cold War, War on Terror, -- and even today, 7/8, when President Biden signed Executive Order 14076.

I personally think Califronia would be in the most capable position due to its 6th largest economy (globally), its natural protection (the Rockys), large size + plentiful nature, & HUGE costal area. That being said, I don't think a single state would be able to thrive on its own, especially w/o federal support. Not to mention the fact that, as evident w/ the Civil War, the Federal Government would NEVER allow any state to secede from the Union.

@PendulumCancel True the desire and will are there. Although, you are missing one fact. Japan's Self-Defense Force can only protect Japan. And I don't mean politically, legally, or popularly -- those factors are a given. I mean, that Japan does not have the capability or logistics to do so. Without US Armed Forces, the Japanese SDF is a paper tiger.

@yr7283 The thing is... the people don't want to. The reason that the JSDF is a paper tiger is due to the general Japanese public still being very pacifistic. Sure the government under Shinzo Abe's administration was lw pro-militarization, but the people still poll against it. It doesn't matter if the Japanese or US Governments want it, it matters if the people want it.

It would be a cool hypothetical to imagine a West Coast Super-state. Obviously centered on California, w/ Washington State holding the military responsibilities -- Oregon would be a nice recreation region/state + a buffer so Cali & Washington don't beef.

@Phrancis5 Well I feel like even red states and blue states don't agree enough to secede as a unit. Maybe 3, 4, or 5 confederacies. All be it, ever since the Civil, the feds have reconstructed the Union so it wouldn't be worth it to secede successfully.

@listenhere1623 No. California's water comes from the North Cal mountains, the Colorado River, & other natural springs. California's biggest water-related problems are scarcity & mismanagement. I WISH, as a Californian, that Kali had enough water to hog.

Or Minnesota and Wisconsin. Or the cold war that would take place between California & Texas (& maybe Alaska too) -- New York would be too preoccupied beefing with the entire East Coast for dominance.
