  2. I think the real issue with people's perspective on Eren is that they don't really understand him. This is not surprising because Isayama-sensei purposely chose to write him ambiguously. Without starting to write a whole essay myself: First and foremost, Eren saw every possibility the future holds and freely chose the path that would give his friends more time. Eren became the "Devil of the world" and tried to destroy it so that Eldians & Marleyans would be forced into cooperating; so that his friends would be seen by the world as heroes (a form of immunity). Furthermore, by wiping out the power-projection potential of every other nation on Earth, Eren found a way for Paradis & his friend to, at least, live a proper lifetime in peace. He could have chosen to spend the last 4 years living happily with Mikasa. But he chose to sacrifice himself (and 80% of humanity) so that Mikasa could live a long life with Jean and have children and even grandchildren. THAT is Eren's freedom; that is the free will he offers those he loves.
