The US economy has performed better when the president of the United States is a Democrat rather than a Republican, almost regardless of how one measures performance…The superiority of economic performance under Democrats rather than Republicans is nearly ubiquitous: it holds almost regardless of how you define success. By many measures, the performance gap is startlingly large. Since 1949, there has been a Democratic advantage in the average performance of key macroeconomic indicators measuring economic health, including GDP, job growth, and unemployment rate. These statements are true, depending on how you measure additions to the debt. We estimate the ten-year cost of the legislation and executive actions Trump signed into law was about $8.4 trillion, with interest. A better way to measure how much Trump added to the debt is to evaluate the ten-year debt impact of the laws and executive orders he signed. We estimate that those added a combined $8.4 trillion to the debt over a ten-year period – consistent with Haley’s claim. US BUDGET WATCH 2024.
