Samuel Johnson, the 18th century English writer said, “Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.” Gore Vidal wrote, “When tyranny comes to the United States, she will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a bible.” How stunningly appropriate those quotes are in describing Trump's tyrannical one term as president.
Trump and his followers seem to think that wrapping themselves in the American flag, screaming FREEDOM, or standing for the anthem makes them super patriots. It no more makes them patriots than me standing in the middle of my garage makes me a Ford F-150.
As a Marine veteran, I have never seen patriotism reduced to such hollow and irrelevant stupidity. To them, patriotism is all about empty childish gestures that show a misunderstanding of America, rather than honoring it. Real Patriotism is caring about what happens to your fellow American citizens. It's about sacrifice and service to others, it's about our shared humanity, while the best of America is about kindness, hospitality, and benevolence.
A true American patriot would use our flag, and everything it's suppose to represent, to unite our country, not to divide it, and not as a weapon against those who have different views or different skin colors.

The insurrection on January 6 proved that phony patriotism poses a threat to America, and to our democracy.

A phony patriot and a phony Christian.
