At the times of USSR thousands of African/Middle East students, that were accepted into Russian universities, were spending the entire 1-st year (the so called "Year of Preparation") exclusively for learning/obtaining language skills, and starting from the 2-nd year of being inside the USSR, they were already fully able to study their professional themes.

Dear Sam, thank you for showing "not so beautiful" (= not so gift-shop-post-card) views of provincial Russia. - But .... this is REAL Russia, whose best value(s) is absolutely NOT its buildings and/or landscapes. The best of Russia is a deeply hidden soul of this vast country and of its people. Once you make a friend among Russians (which is NOT an easy thing to do), they will be your real (not chit-chat) friends always next to you, and they will be endlessly provide you with help they are capable of providing, and ... they'll be doing it FOR FREE as its their inner nature.

One of those guys, mentioned by you, his name is Iliya Yashin (= a personal friend of murdered Boris Nemtsov), has been recently released from a Putin's prison and exchanged for special-agent Krasikov, that was detained in a German prison. Years ago I was keeping some respect to this Mr. Yashin, but .... after Iliya Yashin got settled in Berlin and recently released his "powerful" comments on Trump's team and on German AfD-party, I would smash his face myself if I meet him one day somewhere in one of EU-cities, where he regularly attends to, spreading nowadays his "rainbow" and similar b.s. propaganda.
