  1. The fundamental error is in thinking that ordinary people who have not studied virology or epidemiology can understand any of this at all. The answer is not a "common-sense" thing; it's an advanced math thing and even the advanced math can only give you probabilities, not certain answers. It's funny. People don't do this with other subjects. For instance, if someone asked you to referee a professional boxing match, what would you say? You'd say "I'm sorry, I don't know enough about boxing to referee a match; you'll have to find someone who knows boxing and ask him!" And if someone asked you to evaluate his design for a new car, you'd say: "I'm sorry, I don't know enough about auto mechanics to say whether your design is good or bad." Right? But now, when it comes to virology and epidemiology and genetics and immunology, which are much more complicated and specialized than auto mechanics or boxing, you think you know enough to evaluate the evidence. I don't understand it.
