Well, Coma (1978) was pretty damm great too.

Falling Down (1993), Fargo (1996), and Jackie Brown (1997) captured the sensibilities of the 1990s. The Cold War was over, the internet was new (some people were still calling it the “information superhighway”), those who weren’t willing to adjust got shitcanned, but there were also wonderful new ways of living well, and new ways of scamming people. I think, hopefully, that before too long we’ll be saying something similar about the 2020s.

Update: alongside of the internet, the modern biotech revolution was shifting into high gear. People forget that most Americans didn’t know about DNA analysis until Bill Clinton left a sample on Monica’s blue dress.

Not quite all the characters in Falling Down are “only out for themselves”. Bill’s wife genuinely cares about her daughter, Bill’s mother cares about him, and Rachael Ticotin’s character genuinely cares about Robert Duval’s character, and he genuinely loves his hopeless, neurotic wife.
