Were the Democrats really “trashing their incumbent?” Or were they raising legitimate concerns about their incumbents health ?

Re: “you can’t change the keys” I agree that you can’t introduce fully new keys like “this time the VP choice matters”. But as I understand it, the keys are based on the idea that voters will vote a referendum on The incumbent. Doesn’t it make some difference then that in this particular election both candidates are in a sense incumbents? Have we ever had a race between a sitting incumbent and a recently ex-president?
