  1. Or, imagine if Putin had chosen peace instead of invasion. Why should Putin get to decide which alliances Ukraine joins? If Ukraine decides to join the CHUD alliance, or the WEAZL alliance, or the Balalaika-Group, or the League of Borscht-Eating Republics, why should Putin have any authority to say "yes you may join" or "no you may not join"???

  2. There's something about this that I don't understand. What is the argument that anyone other than Ukraine should decide which alliances Ukraine will apply to for membership? By what authority does Putin claim the right to tell Ukraine "you may join this alliance, but not that one?" Does Putin think that he is President of Ukraine as well as President of Russia? I'm not asking to be antagonistic; I really don't know the answer to this. Can someone explain it to me?

I think USA has taken the position it has taken because we in USA want access to Ukraine's rich deposits of strategic minerals, including rare-earth ores, precious metal ores, lithium, neon gas, nickel, .....[the list goes on]. And why shouldn't we? What to do with Ukraine's natural resources should be up to Ukraine, not up to Putin, shouldn't it?
