@TheOfficialOzClub Right you are! If Baum was trying to convey a secret message with the Oz books, the message is revealed in the third one, OZMA OF OZ. And the message is: Wagner's operas are lots and lots of fun!

Lewis Carroll said that when people asked him what he meant when he wrote THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK. He always answered something like: "I'm sure it means something, but I don't know what."

Another thing worth knowing about L. Frank Baum: he was a Wagner-freak. The third Oz book, OZMA OF OZ, is obviously directly lifted, with minimal changes, from Wagner's opera DAS RHEINGOLD. And in his non-Oz fantasy book JOHN DOUGH AND THE CHERUB, he has a character who is a composer, and plays music which sounds like "someone pounding the keys of the piano with a sledge-hammer", and shouts "I am great! I am greater than Vogner himself! Some people understand Vogner a little, but no one will ever understand my music at all! I am wonderful! I am superb!"

OK, but then what do the Kalidas (bodies like bears, heads like tigers) represent? How about the Hammerheads? And the dainty china country?
