  1. I was in grad school in physical chemistry when the liquid-nitrogen-temperature superconducting ceramics were first discovered in the 1980s. Everyone predicted we'd be riding levitating trains and transmitting 100% power in a few years. Well, the ceramics are brittle and un-malleable, and, they only superconduct in patches, so you can see it with the Meissner effect, but you can't use them for transmission. Still (nearly) useless.
