  2. This one was either natural-origin (I personally think that's still the most likely explanation, but I'm not a virologist; I'm a retired immunochemical generalist) or an unintentional lab-leak. But the next one might well be an engineered weapon. It is getting easier and easier for ordinary biochemical technicians to do routine genetic manipulations on the virus. Any wealthy apocalyptic whacko could probably make a much worse variant in a few years.
