  4. Further on the grip. I always saw in the movies (I know...) a palm-down grip on the mag. THEN I read about gripping the receiver, as you did at first. NOW, I learn the 'palm up' grip of the mag well is the correct way. Bits of info like this is what make your channel stand out!

  6. Too toy-like for me. BUT as with restyling cars, had it achieved its goals and gotten adopted, I would have gotten used to it--hey, I learned to like that hideous M9 pistol! Is a video on the XM25 grenade launcher-- the evolution of the OICW top half-- on your agenda? THAT has an interesting development story.

  11. Good points, sir. I was striving for brevity in my comment. With the Panzershrek, the Germans arguably moved ahead of the US weapon, by finding a way to make the warhead much larger and more effective. The tradeoff was indeed range, but the Soviets ran with it in their RPG series.

  13. Cool! I was a bit disappointed that the French went along with (caved to?) the rest of the Western and adopted an AR pattern rifle. Even if the replacement had been the VHS. The real tragedy though is how the French let their own small arms industry die...

  14.  @Erpyrikk  So true. Long ago, I read an article about just how grimly effective slings could be at long range. IIRC, they rivaled bows. If I had to take the awful choice, I'd rather be shot with a pistol than hit by a slung lead bullet.

  15. I once had an FEG clone in 9x18; it was a pleasant enough shooter when it worked. Ian's hands were evidently too slim for the slide to cut. I imagine Karl's larger, meatier mitts would have been bitten.

  21. The grip and trigger guard brings two words to mind: 'Knuckle Buster'. As Ian indicates, recoil likely gave the fingers gripping the gun a pretty sharp rap!

  30. CZ clones, so no surprise. The CZ pattern wasn't patent-protected, so it was fairly easy for other companies to copy the excellent design.

  31. Masad Ayoob called it 'Everyman's Wondernine'. Glocks had not really caught on yet, and compared to Beretta and S&W offerings, the Ruger was a really good deal. I had a stainless Mk II, and the only issues I had was the long, spongy trigger and that low trigger guard, which noticeably pushed the trigger finger and second finger apart. I felt like it didn't let me get the good, high grip that I really wanted. I swapped for a Taurus PT92--another underrated classic of the era!

  46. I finally got to shoot one recently, and it does indeed bounce around. An unpracticed soldier would indeed miss a lot and in the stress of combat, possibly conclude that the cartridge is ineffective.

  49. Are you up to making a video on the craziness of cartridge nomenclature? Many might not understand the difference between 'rimmed' and 'rimless' cartridges, not to mention all the other obscure and arcane terms that describe metallic cartridges...

  50. Ruger actually pioneered many modern casting techniques, and do casting for the aerospace industry--including high-stress jet engine parts. Given that Rugers are legendary for tank-like toughness, it would be interesting to see them try to develop an all-cast AK. I bet they could do it!
