The Marine Corps' 13-man squad is intended to be deployed as 3, 4-man fire teams. Since this can provide a larger base of fire--two teams firing with one team maneuvering--two IARs are considered as effective as one SAW for fire suppression.

@sly2792004 The problem with the M14 was that, like the other 'battle rifles' of the day, it was too light to be adequately controlled in full-auto fire. This is hilarious because the M14 was also intended to replace M1 and M2 carbines, as well as M3 subguns!! With the new M7, the Army has reintroduced the same problem. In a similar vein, though, the Marines gave one man in each fireteam a clip-on bipod for his M16A1 and called him the AR man. He was supposed to use FA judiciously, while teammates' rifles were supposed to be set on 'semi'.
