  1. Calling the cut-down M16s 'carbines' is a bit funny to me; the M16 itself is pretty much carbine-size compared to M14s or Garands. 😎 Also, the initial buy of AR15s was by the USAF to replace M2 carbines.

  2.  @AKguru762  Read more carefully. I didn't call the M14 'carbine-sized', ALTHOUGH the US Army claimed that the M14 was intended to replace the M2 carbine, along with the M3 submachine gun (and the M1 Garand & BAR)!
