  1. There is very little that is actually cut and dried in firearms terminology; this is part of what makes guns so interesting! As for the 'politically charged' part, those who hate our freedom will pounce on any scary sounding term to promote their agenda. Since the term 'battle rifle' is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, I expect them to start using it in their own rhetoric. Shooters were applying 'assault rifle' to their semi-only guns as a casual definition back in the '80s before the anti's stole it to be used as a scare term.
