  1. The M14 was the 'Official' standard rifle of the USMC as late as 1975; the M16A1 was 'substitute standard', even though the M16 was the rifle in general use by the Corps at the time. I was issued an M41 at Marine Corps OCS in '75. Once the bugs were worked out, the Marines absolutely loved the rifle for its reliability (compared to the early M16s--bad impressions die hard) and its accuracy. I got regular hits at 300yd on human silhouettes (famfire, not qual). Even it the 1990 runup to Desert Storm, there was talk about re-issuing M14s, due to the open desert conditions.
