It looks like Rube Goldberg in an opium den...but it works!! A bit of confusing firearms minutia: Not to try to criticize Ian (he is making the process as understandable as possible), but strictly speaking, a 'rim' is only a rim if it is wider than the case body, such as .38 Special and other revolver cartridges--or .22LR. Since the flat part at the end is the same diameter as the case, the cartridge is 'rimless' and has the extractor groove around the case, which of course the extractor snaps into. Then, to further muddy the water, there is a 'rebated rim', where the not-a-rim behind the extractor groove is smaller than the case body. No doubt there are other exceptions. Clear as mud?? 😎

@mimicrymwot Good point! For all practical purposes, that little lip behind the extractor groove functions as a rim. Rather than meaning 'to lack' the -less can be thought of as 'not as much as', thereby squaring the terminology circle. 😎 I once had a dictionary of firearms terms that got lost when moving. It was a fascinating tome!
