Good video! Firearms nomenclature is notoriously slippery, and it's always interesting to try to nail it down. For example, the M1919 was considered 'light' by the U.S. Army, even though it does meet the (more recent) definition of MMG, since it was not as heavy as the M1917. Of course, the Germans gave a crash course on what a 'light' MG should be. :pThe idea of an automatic rifle for squad firepower has been a part of USMC doctrine since WWII, where they tried to have a BAR in each four man fire team When I took my swing at the Marine Corps in the '70s, the fire team AR man had a clip-on bipod for his M16A1 and was expected to fire mainly FA. The SAW replaced this rifle. With this background, going to the M27 IAR was not a huge stretch. BTW, the Corps still has M249s in inventory.Ian, you mentioned the Lewis gun; how would you classify it?
