You're so lucky there though because used cars are so cheap. I am so jealous of UK prices. They are sometimes 1/3 to 1/4 of prices here for the same car.

Always tricky with an E39 because they are such good cars, but unfortunately if it's a V8 it's probably not worth it unless it's an M5. Their inline 6's can be really good though.

True but that applies to all decent cars, not just Toyota.

Great well rounded approach!! It depends on the car (and how well it's made) and how long you plan on keeping it, combined with analyzing the cost of a new or newer car. Safety is always an interesting reason because it's statistically the chances of needing to use those extra safety features isn't very high. But if you are accident prone or live in an area that is, that decision becomes easier. My Toyota is unfortunately rusting away day by day and the engine will outlast the body/frame. I might have to get a new car just because of the rust. Good mention about insurance! Because newer cars will cost more of course and will require comprehensive coverage if you have a loan. And for those environmentalists, the nice bonus is older cars are better for the environment since their environmental impact has already occurred a long time ago, and even cars made in the last 30 years don't emit much more pollution than new cars. Especially not enough to compensate for the environmental impact of a new car. If you really want to make your car last a long time, obviously address mechanical maintenance, and DIY as much as you feel comfortable doing, but ALSO take care of it cosmetically! This makes a massive difference in resale value but also in how you treat the car! It's a psychological thing. When the car looks nice, you want to keep it running well for a long time!
