It's fundamentally a matter of perspective. To her chances are 1/3 because from her perspective there's three outcomes. It's actually a schroedingers cat type of problem, where the observer decides the outcome. She has no knowledge which monday it is so she has three options. For outside observer that we are there is only one Monday.

Thank you. It now makes perfect sense. I couldn't wrap my head around how this could logically work. But of course since everyone starts at different fixed number, it turns the system from randomized lottery into a systematic search through all different possibilities. It removes the random redundancies from each persons search and thus result in massive increase in efficiency.

I thought this was pretty obvious... I guessed the rule right on a first time something else that "multiply by 2" was proposed. I don't understand why people keep going on with most obvious lines of thinking with issues like this. What I would have done when asked this (I played along when he asked the question): First instinct was "multiply by two", then I would have picked descending odd numbers. I would have guessed right after that. People are weird.
