@LockeWick Not necessarily. Magic is kind of catch all term for everything not explainable by our knowledge (If you like metal music, check out Tarot - Magic and technology, it's rare example that deals with the topic) Also Robert Jordans Wheel of Time books has one of the finest depiction of magic in my opinion. It is built around entire philosophy of existence: In a world that is created as being at the same time history, and future, of the world we live in. Everything is made from viewpoint of the characters, so there is no definitive "facts" on how the world in the books works. Maybe there is magic, that derives from the existence itself, that in the point of time we live in has been forgotten and disappeared. Or maybe the characters in the books live in time, where remnants of high technology of previous eras still exists in a form of magical aspects of the world. In any case the world itself is one of the most crafted ever in fantasy. And Amazon is releasing a series that should come out this year... Hope it turns out at least somewhat good... There's jusst too much to cover well in the books, but lest not judge beforehand...

And another point: What if there wasn't any magic in the world of Game of Thrones? I mean: first season came pretty close, and I would still classify it as fantasy series. It's just that we're so accustomed to Tolkiens legacy (and of course everything that inspired him), that we think it is what define fantasy rather than accepting them as cliches..
