They've been doing this since OBD wasn't even a thing. My 1996 Audi needs a diagnostic tools costing anything from 500 to thousands of euros to do basic repairs like pump timing. There is free software available, they allow to use with aftermarket cables, but that only allows to clean up error codes, and even DELIBERATELY HIDES some of the codes it can read from memory! I find no issue using cracked and illegal copies of software and hardware when the company is giving such middle-finger to people who like and use their products.

I miss the old days, when you bought something used, the manufacturers (well, their vendors) didn't care, but were open to help you. Logically assuming once you WERE looking for new product, you'd come back favoring their products due to good experience. What happened to that? Why every company seems to assume that doesn't work anymore? Is the common rule that it's 10 times easier to keep old customer, than convert a new one lost on them?

I just buy DVD's. They cost pennies and I don't really care of 1080 vs. 720 when they're so much cheaper and reliable.

I bought Canon ink printer 1,5 years ago. Not the cheap one, but 170 eur one. Couldn't be happier with it. No clogging, printing problem etc... Ink lasts at least twice as long as with Epsons. Picture quality for color printing is impeccable. And it can even do printable CD's, which is something I've done surprisingly often since getting it. Epsons I had previously were just garbage.

Oh. And obviously 3,5 mm jack. I've so used to having it didn't even thought to mention that... Music through bluetooth sounds crap.

I used to have 2012 Motorola Droid 4 all the way to 2019 when they started they cut back 3G and I had to replace it with 4G capable phone (Motorola was 4G but not compatible with bandwitdh used in Europe) Was the best phone I've ever had. I miss that proper qwerty keyboard, and very neat and sleek form you could comfortably keep in normal pocket.

@Kolket1389 Yea. It's ridiculous. It's OS. It's job is exactly the same as Win 95 had. To handle the GUI and bridging of software and hardware. There is absolutely zero reason for modern operating systems to be so massive and bloated as they are today. Their job is exactly the same.

I've been using their Xcover models for past years. I've had 4S for some 4 years and got 5S for work phone last year after my ages old J5 gave up. I think these are pretty good still. With button for flashlight and volume, replaceable battery, and full waterproofing etc...

@ixyzyxi Louis is right that it's simply matter of not having any choice. Every decent smartphone nowadays is Apple copy, because their construction allows higher margins. If I had any other choice, I wouldn't buy one.

I find it plain offensive car manufacturers force us to use some software to use basic functions that, like Louis points out, literally only need a switch on the dashboard.

@MauriceB-zn5pv This may be the reason. But I think it shows the weakness in the method. Data analytics can be useless to measure things not easily quantified. If you ask your known customers, it has a bias towords people who already like your new products. If you ask general public, most don't care that much anyway. If you ask about the service, I'd imagine it to be really difficult to draw a real correlation to a sale of a new product down the lne.

You know what's "maintenenance free battery"? It's a battery you can't maintain (by adding fluid) so you have to buy new one. Told me by local battery shop owner years ago, when those started to became the norm.

@gregfordyce9476 Guess what? VAG actually have multiple different brand specific tools for oil plugs!

@atubebuff My father recently had problems with the e-brakes in his Volvo V90. All that was needed for retracting and moving the brakes was to put voltage into a pin in brake saddle. Even easier than with a cable handbrake! Of course, OBD2 is non-brand specific tool as well, that people should handle these days if they're fixing cars by themselves. Not sure though how much you can do for a basic OBD2 reader that is in the reach of DIY repairman. I've never had car that even has OBD, and I won't buy one unless I don't have any other choice.

@atubebuff Well. I'd say 300 quid is not bad when it's standardized system that works on every car.
