There is a massive shortage of engineers suitable for hard and meaningful jobs. If there were engineers available, there will be jobs for them. Sadly, you cannot just take a web coder and make him into an aerospace, automotove or industrial robotics engineer.

A hedge fund can be just as challenging as SpaceX, and they exist pretty much everywhere. Automotive and industrial automation, medical, etc, there is a ton of meaningful jobs.

If you cannot reinvent the wheel when needed, you'll end up in bog boring CRUD jobs and will never do anything meaningful.

Nah. We don't need web programmers. Most of their output is an utter trash perpertuating the users misery. All of it either should not exist at all or better automated with LLMs, for even stochastic parrots are better than code monkeys.

@ivanjermakov the problem with CRUD jobs is that people who are ok with doing CRUD jobs are doing CRUD jobs badly, and their users suffer. Those who could have done CRUD right don't want to.

@CHR1SZ7 how is that "not true"? I'm one of those people who suffer, nearly every time I have to interact with anything CRUD code monkeys created. I'm yet to see a single product of theirs which would not be a complete pile of crap. Also, developers who are mostly motivated by money tend to be the most incompetent and worthless ones. Just an observation, yet I never seen a single counter-example.

@edumorango is not web the most low paid sector in the industry? Conpared to finance, for example? And there is no javascript in HFT, mind you.

@scotthinton4610 and it is clearly done out of desperation. Too hard to find good engineers, once you have them too wasteful to have them working on an UI.

look, it is not you who take risks in an ambitious high-tech startup, it is the investors. Employees get paid handsomely and walk away with money and experience if things go sour.
1
@totalermist are you from the past? Pay is not geographically bound now. True that this is only an option for the already fairly experienced ones.
