Boeing's factory in Washington is the largest building on Earth, those machinists make up 20% of the overall workforce and are integral to production. Any plan to move out of Washington would take decades to realise, time that the machinists can spend getting paid well and looking for other jobs if it becomes evident

@aerohk it's less than a billion dollars per year, Boeing is about to lose that by the 10th day of the strike. Your math isn't mathing

@Rashnak66 I wonder how many instances of managerial fuckups it would take for you to admit that 33,000 machinists are not the reason this plane has a lousy reputation. Could it be that management quashed quality control whistleblowers and swept them under the rug? Could it be stagnating workers wages and reducing benefits, thereby reducing the quality of workers you attract. Could it be outsourcing vast swathes of their production to other facilities like Collins Aerospace or Spirit Aerosystems, who were responsible for MCAS and the door blowout respectively. Could it be using income to pursue 43 billion dollars worth of stock buybacks while your employees get absolutely nothing? No you're right, it must be all the workers' faults, after all, a guy who installs landing gear is obviously at fault for the design of MCAS being linked to one sensor with no redundancies...

That's not the main argument, the main argument is they've had stagnant wages for over 10 years and their pensions were repealed, which they want reinstated
3
@gw6496 if Boeing could replace 33,000 skilled machinists they would, but they can't
2
@thuandao4243 they have to, the union agreed to a 10 year no strike clause in 2014 because Boeing was threatening layoffs. The contract ended this past September
2
Oh cry me a river, these people hadn't a raise in 14 years, they went in looking for the money Boeing was hoarding and they got it, hats off to them
1
@ducsieuma8884 you live in Detroit but know Everett Machinists, God you people used to try harder with your lies. Boeing's own accounts showed machinists were making 75k on average, and now the union strike has won them a 38% raise and 12k signing bonus :)
1
Are you serious? Executives are getting 8 figure salaries, they spent 43 billion dollars on stock buybacks in the past 10 years while giving the workers nothing. No, management has brought Boeing down, but they're not going to exploit these workers any longer.
1
Sure and an electrician just connects wires, it's all so simple when you're simple
1
Blackmail? This is capitalism, plain and simple, you fight for your paycheck
1
The once in a century pandemic? On top of that why weren't they getting any raises during the Trump administration when Boeing was profitable, nobody gave a rat's ass about them then
1
You don't compare to worldwide wages, that's highly disingenuous, you compare to local and industry wages, of which machinists are undeniably underpaid
1
They don't have a choice, their previous contract was 10 years, you're not allowed to strike during that time, it just ran out this month, they have to negotiate a new long term deal and after a decade of no raises and repealed pensions they are rightfully pissed
1
@theirishprofessor-k1x agreed, hopefully a solution is reached sooner rather than later, but whatever happens they'll be digging into another multi-year contract that will prohibit striking
1
Now is the only time to strike, as determined by their contracts
1
@rickg882 we'll see in the upcoming reports, but I wouldn't rule anything out, Boeing being weak right now also means they have less bargaining room. Regardless I hope the workers get a good raise
1
Boeing was profitable for years before and still they didn't give their workers any raises for over half a decade. Management compromised on quality by outsourcing without sufficient QA, these machinists have done everything right, no one has to work for shitty wages
1
Their salaries are already acknowledged by Boeing, $75,600 on average, less than a 4% raise in the past 10 years. It's pitiful on Boeing's part and you need to get your head out of your ass
1
@thuandao4243 yup the union dropped the ball on that one, which I reckon is why they're so invested in the strike this time round, it's been a decade in the making. Hopefully it gets resolved and those workers can keep providing for their families. God bless you too 🙏
1
Because Trump cutting the funding and oversight of the FAA turned out to be such an advantageous thing for everyone involved huh
1
The actions of the leader of the company reflect upon the company itself and its culture. This move was either tone deaf or abysmally timed
1
@skyranger1366 cheaper short term, vastly more expensive long term. The capitalist mindset is incredibly shortsighted
1
Then you clearly don't know what they do, or who's responsible for the lack of quality.
1
That's bullshit, get your facts straight
1
Sounds like you don't have a clue what you're talking about
1
Spreading misinformation already? Nice try but you're not going to convince anyone
