  1. No, you don't. Aluminium and Steel mills take years or decades of investment, and even then they're not a one size fits all type of deal, they have to be specialised for the end product. Similarly Canada has ample space for it's timber industry, the US doesn't at present, and planting for a bigger forestry industry takes time, unless you chop down all the natural parks. Then there's goods you simply cannot produce in the US, be it by climate, circumstance or trademark, like avocados, tequila, parmesan and to an extent, eggs. Trade keeps countries alive, look at North Korea if you want to see where lack of trade gets you

  2. ​ @williamprezioso2742 the world produces enough food to feed 12 billion people annually right now, the US isn't the only market to buy from. The biggest problem with getting food to the hungry is transport logistics, not quantity of supply

  3. You can't domestically produce goods under a foreign trademark, and you can't grow certain foods that rely on a different climate. The US is the second largest exporter of beef in the world, much of it high quality and expensive, so the tariffs on beef will make foreign markets less likely to buy and won't make domestic markets more likely to buy, due to it being premium meat.

  5. Nobody needs your food, there is more than enough produced annually to feed the world plus an extra 4 billion people. If you hike up prices that just makes other markets more appealing.
