You also see dreads a lot in Trinidad, a country where half the original immigrants were Hindus, many were followers of Shiva (those males keep dreads). The keeping of dreads has been going on by Shiva worshippers for thousands of years. There is scriptural evidence in 4000 year old texts called Vedas.

Ras Tafari was a Hindu Indian Shivaite who had dreadlocks and influenced Carribean culture. If you look at Carribean culture, they are most associated with spirituality in Jamaica and Trinidad, both countries that had major Hindu influence. Hindus don't get upset if you adopt their practices. The point of their religion is to be in union with all other beings, not upset at them.
