Yes, however there are two points given against this:
Firstly that with 'progressive' taxes & social services paid for from the public purse, big contributors & state decision makers have arguable interest in preventing waste and minimising avoidable costs.
Secondly that we are social creatures, most happy & healthy, on average, within communities, where the concerns of others influence our actions & decisions.
From where we are I think there is a balanced carrot & stick process that can be applied that will mirror harsh reality whilst providing support to the deserving.
Having something like the NHS follow the form of a market service, (each person with a national health credit card & treatments 'paid' with costs transparent to everyone), would bring in more reality; as would having the Health MOTs that are supposedly happening on an annual basis that emphasise the hard facts of consequences.
As for advertising, bans are almost always a terrible idea, what would be better compromise would be having a serious fact based view of what is a healthy balance, (that includes pleasure & indulgence), and requires platforms to reflect the 'servings' pushed in each day period to reflect that.
