@TheXenosis86 I don’t think so, the main arch stands on these two pillars, there’s no way structural integrity of any bridge could be maintained with one of them just taken out. They aren’t just there for cosmetic reasons, they are really important. It’s not unreasonable to expect ships to be able to navigate between them and not ram right into one

@General_Kenobi_212 Why should a whole cruising company go bankrupt if a single incompetent helmsman did something stupid in the moment? If a McDonald’s employee gets into a car crash, should McDonald’s go bankrupt?

The thing is the crash itself wasn’t even Schettino's fault mostly. Yes he did order the closer approach of the island and as captain he takes responsibility, but all his orders to deal with the situation were accurate and would’ve saved the ship had the crew been competent enough to act on them, particularly the helmsman who multiple times just turned the rudder on wrong headings that Schettino didn’t order. Moreover, the navigation officer didn’t relay their coordinates in the first place which would’ve let to the bridge realizing how close they really are. His orders would actually have prevented a collision had they just been executed as ordered. The main reason why he was blamed so much (rightfully), was because he abandoned ship while knowing there were still passengers on board that he could absolutely save without endangering his own life. If he had just acted responsibly after the crash and evacuated anyone he could, then I honestly think he would’ve been way better if not even positively remembered. Potentially like a Sully 2

And not to mention the importance that bridge had for infrastructure in the first place

@TheXenosis86 It’s a supporting pillar being hit by tens of thousands of tons, what do you mean? This is in no way the result of faulty design on behalf of the bridge, that’s just what would happen if you use a huge ship like that as a ram

@Vin50000 First off, not necessarily, and secondly, that means they have to go bankrupt from it? That makes no sense, you would essentially just give everyone under an organization a blank check to do whatever they want because it’s the organization that’s held liable. It’s like the people that said "we were just following orders" as camp guards. No, you are first and foremost responsible for yourself as an adult. Depending on how much they acted alone or how much was following company procedure this might make the company more or less involved, but at the end of the day, they are independent actors. The company didn’t steer that ship into that beam, the people on that bridge did

@General_Kenobi_212 Yeah and he was still in that position because he applied for it. They didn’t force him to be helmsman, the crash is his fault first and foremost and that’s undeniable
1
@General_Kenobi_212 Well yeah, they should have more rigorous procedures and definitely should’ve not let him become helmsman, I didn’t say they don’t have any blame, but most of the blame absolutely is on him himself. He is the one that directly endangered these people, he should’ve known that he can’t do this because he’s an adult, which comes with responsibilities. He’s not a child that doesn’t have agency.

@SourDonut99 If it were that simple as pictured here, sure. But measuring competence can be pretty subjective, especially when you’re talking about thousands of employees with a myriad of skillsets and jobs to do. Yes, if it truly is leniency on their part when they knew the person wasn’t fit for the job, then it should of course be their fault to some degree too. It’s just hard to determine something like this most of the time. Unless it’s so obvious as with Jacob Russell who helmed the Costa Concordia, an Indonesian who never sailed any ship and couldn’t really speak the relevant languages, and was just cheap. But it’s not always that easy

@Pacifica_909 I just described the events as they happened, you can go look these parts up yourself. sorry if that goes against your preconceived narrative
